Days 1-7: establish the basics
- Confirm your accommodation and keep written evidence of your Portuguese address.
- Arrange a local mobile number if it will help with appointments, deliveries and account verification.
- Confirm your NIF details and keep the official confirmation securely.
- Open or activate banking/payment arrangements that suit your situation.
- Set up electricity, water, gas where applicable, and internet if they are not already included.
- Keep your residence/entry documents and upcoming appointment information organised in one folder.
Days 8-15: administrative setup
- If applicable to your situation, organise your NISS or Social Security matters.
- Arrange health-service registration when eligible. Foreign residents may receive an SNS user number through the relevant public-health process; the number itself does not automatically guarantee that all healthcare costs are covered.
- Check whether you can use any current combined identification-number service available to eligible foreigners with a Portuguese address, as locations and eligibility can change.
- Create access to the official digital services you actually need and store passwords securely.
Days 16-30: settle into daily life
- Check the rules applying to your foreign driving licence and whether any exchange/registration step is necessary.
- Confirm that your tax address and other official records reflect your actual status where required.
- Choose your local health centre, pharmacy and emergency contacts.
- Review home, health, motor and other insurance needs.
- If you have children, complete any school or childcare administration that applies to your family.
- Start learning how local services work: municipal services, waste collection, public transport, parking and deliveries.
Keep a simple admin system
Portugal becomes much easier when you keep records. Save every receipt, contract, application reference and official email. Use a calendar for deadlines and appointments, and maintain one secure cloud folder for your household documents.
Do not try to complete everything on day one
Some registrations depend on residence status, employment, address or previous steps. The correct sequence is different for every household. Prioritise what you actually need and avoid submitting duplicate applications simply because someone else’s checklist says you should.
