Moving from the USA to Portugal

Trusted by clients from the US, Canada & UK

Start with your length and purpose of stay

US citizens can generally make short visa-free visits to the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, subject to entry conditions. Moving to Portugal for a longer stay is different: you normally need to use the Portuguese national residence route that fits your circumstances before treating Portugal as your long-term home. Eligibility and required documents should be checked through official Portuguese sources or a qualified professional.

Build your pre-move document file

  • Valid US passport and copies of the identification pages.
  • Civil-status documents that may be relevant to your family situation.
  • Proof of accommodation and financial documents relevant to your move.
  • Insurance documentation and medical records you may need.
  • Any foreign public documents that may require an Apostille and/or certified translation before use in Portugal.

Organise your Portuguese essentials

A NIF is often one of the first useful administrative items because it is commonly requested for contracts, banking and other practical matters. Depending on your status after arrival, you may also need to organise Social Security and health-service registration. Do these in the order that actually applies to your residence and work situation.

Housing, banking and communications

Do not commit to a long lease solely from photographs if you can avoid it. Confirm deposit terms, contract duration, what utilities are included and the exact address. For banking, ask each institution what identification, NIF, address and income documents it requires. A Portuguese mobile number can also make local bookings and account verification easier.

Tax and financial planning

US citizens can remain subject to US tax-filing obligations even when living abroad. Portuguese tax residency can create additional obligations. Cross-border tax treatment is highly individual, so this is an area where an accountant or tax professional familiar with both jurisdictions may be valuable.

Your first weeks in Portugal

Once you have arrived, focus on your address, communications, banking, health arrangements and any residence-related appointments or administrative steps that apply to your case. Keep digital copies of every submission and confirmation. PortaWay can help you turn these practical tasks into a clear relocation roadmap without providing legal or immigration representation.
