What is a NIF?
A NIF – Número de Identificação Fiscal – is Portugal’s individual tax identification number. It is a nine-digit number used to identify a person in dealings with the Portuguese Tax and Customs Authority. The number remains the same whether the person is registered as resident or non-resident.
Why do people need one?
A NIF is commonly requested for everyday financial and contractual activities in Portugal. Examples include employment, certain contracts, banking, property-related matters and interacting with Portuguese tax or social-security systems. The exact point at which you need it depends on what you are doing.
Can a foreigner obtain a NIF?
Yes. Foreign nationals can request a NIF whether they are already living in Portugal or are still registered as non-resident. The documents and method used depend on the applicant’s circumstances and whether the request is made personally or through an authorised representative.
Typical documents
- A valid passport or other accepted identification document.
- Proof of the applicant’s foreign or Portuguese address when required.
- Where a representative submits the request, appropriate authority/representation documentation and the representative’s identification.
- Any additional document requested by the Portuguese Tax Authority for the specific case.
Resident vs non-resident registration
A person who has not yet become Portuguese tax resident can initially be registered as non-resident. Later, when their circumstances change and Portuguese tax-residency requirements are met, their tax address/status should be updated through the appropriate official process.
Do not assume that obtaining a NIF by itself makes you tax resident.
